Think Big and Reach 1 % Every Day
Here are the answers to the most common questions about what MIDEGO does:
What does "Think Big and Reach 1% Every Day" mean?
MIDEGO has a simple yet powerful philosophy for reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).: We think big and develop solutions, programs and products that everyone can put to work so we reach the MDGs 1% at a time. This philosophy is based on our experience that to succeed in reaching any goal and particularly to reach the MDG targets by 2015, every health and development professional, every organization, and every citizen needs to succeed; everyone needs to do their share every day.
Let's see how "Thinking Big" works for three MDGs. First, we think of the goal and the challenge to reach it and then think of many ways of overcoming the challenge:
For example, MDG 4 is about improving child survival. Our challenge is that we need to do something now because every year more than 10,000,000 children die of preventable and treatable conditions before the age of five.
Now let's see MDG 5, which is about improving maternal health. Our challenge is that we need to something now about the 500,000 women who die of preventable pregnancy and delivery complications every year.
Think of MDG 6. This goal is about reducing mortality from HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other disease. Our immediate challenge is to do something about the 4 million people die of HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis every year.
And what if 6.7 billion people in our planet had had the chance to learn how to protect their health and the health of their family and prevent disease?
Thinking as many "What if" questions about who needs health services now and where is one of the simple "Think Big" tools MIDEGO uses to help find innovative public health solutions. After thinking big, we need to get to the business of doing at least 1% of that every day!
How can MIDEGO help me reach 1% Every Day and contribute to reach the MDGs?
We get this question all the time! The first step is to learn how to focus your efforts and resources every day so you can reach 1% of those that need your services. MIDEGO has created a number of programs, services and products to help health professionals, development workers and organizations to rapidly act and monitor their results and increase their effectiveness. Our tools and programs are designed to make you work simple and easy! Here is an example of how we do it. If a health post needs to immunize 300 children against measles in a village, the local health provider may consider the resources available and choose to immunize 3 children in average a day, in which way, he or she will be done in 100 work day and reach the 300 target in 20 weeks or five months. If the health worker chooses to immunize 5 children in average per day, or 20 children in average per weekly outreach patrol, the work will be done in 15 weeks or a little less than four months. The trick is to learn to set daily or weekly targets like this for all the services that are required and work with the communities to inform the mothers and line them up with their children so they can all be immunized when planned. MIDEGO has tools to help align efforts in this way to succeed and measure success on a daily basis! MIDEGO helps clients develop this "1%" success mindset and organizational culture to overcome every day challenges and get work done no matter what!
Is this all we need to reach the MDGs?
No, there is one more thing. We need work in partnership with all stakeholders, other organizations, donors, service providers, communities, etc. We cannot reach the MDGs alone. In fact, we need to connect with everyone around the globe that is working to reach one or another MDG and work in Global Partnerships. MIDEGO defines a partnership as a "functional and efficient network (FEN)" in which all stakeholders, governments, donors, clinics, hospitals, NGOs, international and national health professionals, and patients work in a concerted way, adding value to each others' efforts, avoiding overlap, competition, or wasting time and resources. MIDEGO has created a number of tools and solutions to build, improve and sustain FENs. A FEN starts with three basic questions such as: What networks are there in this community? How much do these networks and each stakeholder contribute to reach the MDGs? And what are the results achieved? Each question leads to a number of tools and solutions that allows clients to create, grow or change FENs. Contact MIDEGO if you are interested in setting up a FEN or improve your partnerships.
